The film tells about the fate of Ivan Ermakov, a soldier of the Russian army, who is serving in Chechnya. During the hostilities, Ivan is captured, by the local field commander Aslan who treats Russian prisoners as slaves, forcing them to do all the hard work.

In captivity, Ivan meets the Russian prisoner officer Medvedev, the Englishman John Boyle and his fiancée Margaret. John is released to collect a large sum as ransom for his bride. Ivan manages to escape with John. When John fails to to find the money he asks Ivan for help to infiltrate the dangerous territory of Chechnya.
